Jyotirmoy Dey



Jyotirmoy Dey also known as Jyotendra Dey, Commander J, and J Dey, was an Indian journalist, crime and investigations editor for MID Day and an expert on the Mumbai Underworld.

He is survived by his wife Shubha Sharma, also a journalist, and his mother Bina Dey.



A Mumbai court on Wednesday found Chhota Rajan, along with eight others,guilty for the murder of journalist Jyotirmoy Dey.Chohta Rajan and 8 others were sentenced to life imprisonment and fine of Rs 26 lakh under all sections. The court acquitted former journalist Jigna Vora and Paulson Joseph of all charges.


Jyotirmoy Dey was a veteran Indian investigative journalist who was shot dead in June 2011 allegedly at the behest of gangster Chhota Rajan. Four persons on two motorcycles fired four to five rounds from behind at Dey, who was also riding a bike, near Spectra Building at D Mart in Hiranandani area of Powai in Mumbai.


According to Tehelka magazine,Dey began a career in journalism as a freelancer for the afternoon despatch & Courier and Mid-Day in the Early 1990s.at the time, he mostly wrote on forest encroachment and man-animal conflict. It was only in 1996 that he joined the indian Express and specialised in crime reporting.
