The heart is like any other muscle in body. It needs an adequate blood supply to provide oxygen so that the muscle can contract and pump blood to the rest of the body. Not only does the heart pump blood to the rest of the body, it also pumps blood to itself via the coronary arteries.

What is heart bypass surgery?
Imagine you’re on a highway. An accident causes traffic to pile up ahead. Emergency crews redirect cars around the congestion. Finally, you’re able to get back on the road and the route is clear.

This surgery is done when coronary arteries become blocked or damaged. These arteries supply your heart with oxygenated blood. If these arteries are blocked or blood flow is restricted, the heart doesn’t work properly. This can lead to heart failure.

How it Works?
A surgeon removes a blood vessel, called a graft, from another part of your body, like your chest, leg, or arm. He attaches one end of it to your aorta, a large artery that comes out of your heart. Then, he attaches the other end to an artery below the blockage.

Heart-healthy Tips
Eat more vegetables and fruits,
Nuts, beans, and seeds. There’s no doubt that beans are good for your heart.
Processed meats. This includes hot dogs and deli meats. They're packed with sodium, nitrates, and other preservatives that can harm your heart.
Refined and processed grains. Think white bread and white rice. Processing removes much of the healthy parts of the grain
Limit your calories.
Reduce stress.
Exercise regularly
If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation
Avoid smoking. 
 
Results 
After surgery, most people feel better and may remain symptom-free for as long as 10 to 15 years.
Although bypass surgery improves blood supply to the heart, it doesn't cure underlying coronary artery disease. Your results and long-term outcome will depend in part on taking your medications to prevent blood clots, lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol and help control diabetes as directed, and following healthy lifestyle recommendations, such as these:

    Stop smoking.
    Follow a healthy-eating plan, such as the DASH diet.
    Maintain a healthy weight.
    Exercise regularly.
    Manage stress.
